PCA Tip of the Week

Guidelines for Honoring the Game
The key to preventing adult misbehavior in youth sports is a youth sports culture in which all involved "Honor the Game." Honoring the Game gets to the ROOTS of the matter and involves respect for the Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates and one's Self. You don't bend the rules to win. You understand that a worthy opponent is a gift that forces you to play to your highest potential. You show respect for officials even when you disagree. You refuse to do anything that embarrasses your team. You live up to your own standards even if others don't. Here are ways that parents can create a positive youth sports culture so that children will have fun and learn positive character traits to last a lifetime.

Before the Game:
1. Make a commitment to Honor the Game in action and language no matter what others may do.
2. Tell your child before each game that you are proud of him or her regardless of how well he or she plays.

During the Game:
1. Fill your children's "Emotional Tank" through praise and positive recognition so they can play their very best.
2. Don't give instructions to your child during the game. Let the coach correct player mistakes.
3. Cheer good plays by both teams (this is advanced behavior!)
4. Mention good calls by the official to other parents.
5. If an official makes a "bad" call against your team? Honor the Game—BE SILENT!
6. If another parent on your team yells at an official? Gently remind him or her to Honor the Game.
7. Don't do anything in the heat of the moment that you will regret after the game. Ask yourself, "Will this embarrass my child or the team?"
8. Remember to have fun! Enjoy the game.

After the Game:
1. Thank the officials for doing a difficult job for little or no pay.
2. Thank the coaches for their commitment and effort.
3. Don't give advice. Instead ask your child what he or she thought about the game and then LISTEN. Listening fills Emotional Tanks.
4. Tell your child again that you are proud of him or her, whether the team won or lost.

NEW Challenger Series being formed
No strikes. No outs. Everybody plays. Everybody wins.

The fundamental goal of Challenger Baseball is to give everyone a chance to play. To realize that goal, Challenger has two basic rules: every player bats each inning, and every player plays the field. We don't count strikes, and we don't count outs. Everybody scores, and everybody wins.

The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League to enable boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 4-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide. Today more than 30,000 children participate in more than 900 Challenger Divisions worldwide.

Challenger Baseball participants learn not only the fundamentals of baseball, but also experience pulling together as a team, be cheered on by a crowd, and being encouraged by their peers. All players are named all-stars, and all receive trophies at the end-of-the-season picnic.

If you are interested in participatng as a Volunteer or your signing up your child to play, email us at challenger@tvall.org

Announcing registration is now being accepted for the 2011 Temecula Valley Baseball Academy
The Temecula Valley Baseball Academy training and development program is open to boys and girls planning on playing at the T-ball level or higher for the 2012 regular little league season (4-yrs-old as of 4-30-11). This program runs the five Sundays in October without any conflicts with youth soccer or football.

Professional Minor League players will be on hand to help teach and coach the players during the training sessions. This unique instructional "Training Academy" will focus on the fundamentals of baseball for all levels offering the opportunity for players to practice in a non-competitive setting. Sessions for players will include practice(s) from catching and throwing to base running and hitting to pitching followed by scrimmages with similarly aged players. This is also a great opportunity to get ready for the Spring Little League season.

To sign up the 2011 Temecula Valley Baseball Academy training sessions visit www.tvall.org
$50 registration.

Great News!
Foul Ball Safety

Great news!
The City of Temecula has given the league confirmation from the city this morning that they have allocated funds to begin retrofitting safety measures that will take place at RRSP fields # 1 and 2. For those that are not aware of the situation, last year, we encountered an enormous amount of foul balls which hit several of our children. With the help from Dan Robbins, one of our dads in LL, we were able to successfully send our message regarding these safety concerns to the right group of people. It's planned to be done before our season starts in March 2012.
